Clean your stems before mixing
The vocal stem sounds brittle, the drum stem has a faint ghost of the vocal, and the bass seems to lose weight when all the parts play together. The direct answer is to clean only the problems that survive a full-song check, then rebalance the stems before you start mixing for tone or loudness. A separated stem does not need to sound perfectly isolated. It needs to combine with the other parts without drawing attention to bleed, unstable texture, timing changes, or a new tonal hole.
Keep the untouched full mix beside the stems. You will use it as a musical reference, not as another layer that plays throughout the session. Suno’s official Studio 2.0 documentation says Studio can export a full song, a selected range, or a multitrack project in 32-bit WAV or MP3, and that individual stems can be downloaded as WAV files. Product controls and plan limits can change, so treat the Help Center and the export menu you see today as the source of truth rather than an old tutorial.
For cleanup before mixing, prefer the highest-quality WAV option available to you. MP3 can be useful for listening copies, but it is a compressed delivery format and gives you less room for repeated processing. Export the full mix as well as the stems, even if you plan to work only with the separated files. The full mix preserves the balance and emotional shape you originally chose.
Before importing anything into a digital audio workstation, or DAW, check the package:
- Confirm that every stem belongs to the same song version and export pass.
- Use clear names such as

If the stem sum is radically different from the full mix before you touch a processor, stop. Look for a missing file, an accidental mute, an offset start, automatic warping, or a doubled original mix. Cleanup cannot solve an import error.
Solo the stem, then return to the full song
Solo means listening to one stem by itself. It is useful for finding a click, a metallic vowel, a noisy gap, or a reverb tail that carries another instrument. It is also easy to misuse. Separation artifacts can sound dramatic in isolation while disappearing completely when the song plays.
Use a two-view test for every candidate problem:
- In solo, locate the exact moment and describe what you hear. “A vocal trace appears after the snare” is actionable. “The drum stem sounds bad” is not.
- In the full stem mix, listen at a comfortable level and ask whether that trace still changes the groove, tone, lyric, or sense of space.
- Bypass any proposed fix and replay the same ten-to-twenty-second passage at matched loudness.
- Keep the change only if the full song becomes easier to follow without losing musical detail.
I usually check the busiest chorus first. That is where metallic texture, vocal spill, and brittle cymbals stop hiding behind the arrangement. I then check one exposed intro, verse, or breakdown, because a treatment that survives both a dense and a sparse passage is less likely to be solving only one lucky moment.
Do not erase every sound that belongs to another stem. A small amount of vocal in a reverb or “other” stem may be part of the space that holds the mix together. A faint cymbal trace in the vocal stem may be inaudible when the drums return. Bleed, timing, and phase cautions
Bleed is sound from one part appearing in another stem. With separated stems, it may be a soft vocal shadow in the instruments, a drum transient inside the vocal, or a reverb tail shared across several files. Bleed is not automatically a defect. It becomes a cleanup target when it causes a repeat, a smear, a harsh buildup, or an obvious change when the stems combine.
Avoid a hard gate as your first move. A gate turns audio down when it falls below a threshold, which can remove gaps but also chop breaths, cymbal decay, room tone, and reverb. Start with clip gain or a short manual fade around one exposed problem. If that works in the full song, you have solved the issue without making every quiet moment obey the same rule.
Timing deserves the same restraint. Do not slide a whole stem because one separated transient looks soft or late. Move a file only when you can hear a consistent timing offset from the beginning to the end of the song. If the first chorus aligns but the second does not, the problem is not a simple global offset. A manual edit, a different separation, or the original mix may be safer.
Phase describes the timing relationship between similar waveforms. When related audio is combined with a delay or polarity difference, some frequencies can become stronger while others become weaker. Stop when a phase “fix” makes one section bigger but another section thinner. Stem separation can leave complex overlaps that no single polarity switch will solve across the entire song.
A cleanup order that keeps the mix stable
Work from obvious, local problems toward broad processing. Save a new version after each stem so you can return to the last stable sum.
Start with the vocal. Remove isolated clicks with a short edit or fade. Tame one harsh consonant before reaching for a de-esser across the whole performance. If the vocal has moving metallic texture or robotic edges, compare a restrained stem treatment with a full-mix approach. Do not try to process a wrong word, broken note, or changing vocal identity into a new performance.
Move to the drums. Check kick and snare attacks in the full song. Clean only clicks, brittle spray, or bleed that changes the groove. Heavy denoise can soften transients, which are the short attacks that make drums feel immediate. Stop if the snare loses snap or the cymbals turn papery.
Then listen to the bass for unstable low notes, clicks, and level jumps. Use clip gain for one note before compressing the entire stem. Compare in mono and with the kick present. A soloed bass can sound clean while the combined low end becomes weaker because of timing or phase interaction.
Leave harmonic and “other” stems until the main parts are stable. Pads, guitars, keys, effects, and shared ambience often carry the most overlap. Remove only a repeatable distraction. Broad high-frequency cuts can reduce metallic texture, but they can also remove air and distance from the arrangement.
Finish with the full stem sum. Bypass all cleanup at once, level-match the result, and replay the chorus plus one quiet section. If the cleaned version is only darker, smaller, or louder, it is not ready. Return to the last change that produced a clear improvement.
Manual edits are ideal for one click, one noisy gap, one exposed consonant, or one stable resonance. They become difficult when a synthetic edge moves between vocal, cymbals, reverb, and several separated parts. - the loudest chorus, where buildup and harshness return;

Compare the rebuilt stem sum with the original full mix at matched loudness. Before the mix stage, keep:
- the untouched full mix as a reference;
- the original stems;
- the cleaned stems with clear version names;
