What to check before cleanup

Keep an untouched copy. Rename the working file clearly, and do not overwrite your only source. This sounds fussy until a strong processing pass makes the verse cleaner and the chorus worse.
Choose the best source file you already have
Use the least damaged version available. A WAV usually gives later processing more room than a low-bitrate MP3, but a clean MP3 can still be worth testing. Converting an MP3 to WAV does not restore discarded detail; it only puts the same compressed audio in a larger container.
Avoid files that have passed through messaging apps, screen recording, social platforms, or several export cycles. Every lossy step can blur transients and add a watery edge. An artifact cleaner may reduce one texture while exposing another that arrived during compression.
If you have several lawful versions, compare them before touching EQ. The best source may not be the loudest one. Look for cleaner consonants, more separate cymbal hits, and reverb that decays without a fizzy tail.

Manual cleanup path

- Level-match the processed and original versions.
- Identify one symptom: sibilance, ringing, fizz, harsh upper mids, or smeared ambience.
- Try the narrowest tool that fits that symptom.
- Bypass the processor while the full mix plays.

- Export a short test and listen away from the editing screen.
For isolated ringing, use a narrow EQ boost only to locate the area, then turn it into a modest cut. If the resonance moves, static EQ will miss it in one section and remove too much in another. Dynamic EQ is safer when the harsh band appears only on louder phrases.
A restrained de-esser can help sharp consonants or hats. Set it in context. A vocal that sounds perfectly smooth in solo can lose its diction when the instrumental returns.
Steady hiss may respond to gentle denoise. Moving fizz usually does not produce a stable noise print, and aggressive reduction can replace it with watery modulation. Stop as soon as reverb tails begin to pulse or consonants lose their shape.
Automation is underrated. Two or three short problem moments may need less damage from a manual gain move than from a processor running for the entire song.

Use this order:

- Make mix-level corrections if stems or a session are available.
- Master the cleaner source.
- Run final quality control on several playback systems.

Compare the result without loudness bias
Bring the original and cleaned file to a similar perceived level. Switch during the same lyric, drum fill, or reverb tail. Do not compare one file at the verse and the other at the chorus.
Listen for the exact symptom you named before processing. If it was a metallic vocal edge, check held vowels and phrase endings. If it was splashy hats, listen for separate hits rather than a brighter top end. If it was sticky reverb, check whether the tail clears before the next line.
Then listen for collateral damage:
- Did the singer move backward?
- Did consonants disappear?
- Did cymbals lose their initial hit?
- Did the room or reverb collapse?
- Did the mix become smaller or less lively?
A good cleanup can be subtle. The track should feel easier to play loudly, but it should still sound like the same production.
Limitations
Cleanup cannot rebuild information that is not in the file. It cannot recover a studio master from a compressed render, restore a clipped transient perfectly, or separate a stereo mix into clean original stems.
It also cannot fix composition problems. Wrong notes, awkward lyrics, timing, pronunciation, arrangement, and an unwanted performance need editing or regeneration. A texture processor cannot turn those decisions into different ones.
Some artifacts may remain because removing them would take too much musical detail with them. A restrained pass that leaves a little shimmer is often better than a dull, phasey result.
