Your AI song has a vocal worth keeping, but the cymbals turn sandy and the reverb feels thin when you start cleanup. You notice one MP3, one WAV, and perhaps a FLAC copy in your downloads folder. Which file should you use? Choose the earliest genuine lossless export available. Use the original MP3 only when that is the best source you actually have. Converting an MP3 to WAV or FLAC does not restore the detail removed during MP3 encoding.

The filename is only the start of the decision. You also need to know where the file came from, whether it has already been converted, and which version still represents the generator export. A clean workflow protects that source first, makes a working copy, and avoids another lossy encode until the final delivery requires one.

Lossy vs lossless in audible terms

Lossy compression saves space by representing the audio with less information. MP3 is a lossy format. ITU documentation describes MPEG-1 Layer III, better known as MP3, as a form of lossy data compression. A second lossy export can add more change around the same difficult material.

Lossless audio keeps the audio samples without that kind of discard. FLAC compresses PCM audio, then decodes it back to audio that Xiph.Org describes as bit-for-bit identical to the input. A common PCM WAV also stores the samples without perceptual compression, though WAV is a container and the extension alone does not prove which encoding sits inside it. Check the file information in your editor instead of trusting the name.

In practical terms, lossless does not mean “better music.” It means you have not thrown away more source data at this storage step. A genuine WAV or FLAC export can still contain metallic shimmer, robotic vocal texture, clipped peaks, or a smeared reverb tail. Those problems are part of the audio you exported. The format preserves them along with the parts of the song you want to keep.

I usually check the busiest chorus first. That is where a synthetic edge tends to stop hiding behind the arrangement, and it is also where a weak lossy encode can make cymbals, vocal air, and reverb harder to judge. Then I replay an exposed verse or intro. The two passages tell me more than the extension by itself.

Generator export preflight

Go back to the generator before you open a converter. If a lossless download is available, get it directly from the project or song menu. Do not use a social-media rip, a screen recording, or an MP3 that was sent through a messaging app when the original export is still accessible.

Suno’s current Help Center says WAV downloads on the main site are available to Pro and Premier subscribers and must be downloaded from suno.com; mobile download defaults to MP3. Its Studio 2.0 documentation lists full-song, selected-range, and multitrack export in 32-bit WAV or MP3, plus WAV downloads for individual stems. Product options can change, so check the menu shown for your account and project instead of assuming every route offers the same files.

Use this preflight before cleanup:

  1. Open the original song or Studio project rather than a shared playback page.
  2. Choose the full mix unless you have a clear stem-level problem and a mixing plan.
  3. Select WAV when it is a genuine export option and you want the best available cleanup source.
  4. If MP3 is the only available original, download it once and keep that file untouched.
  5. Record the export date, source project, format, and any project settings that affect the render.
  6. Play the first seconds, busiest chorus, quietest gap, and final tail before doing any processing.

FLAC is useful when another generator or production tool provides it as an original lossless export. It is not listed as a current Suno Studio 2.0 audio export option in the official page cited here. Do not convert a Suno MP3 to FLAC and label it as the lossless original. That description would be false even though the new FLAC file itself uses lossless compression.

Check rights separately from sound quality. A technically clean WAV does not establish ownership, commercial-use permission, copyright protection, or distributor acceptance. Keep the license or account evidence that applies to the song, and run the wider release-readiness workflow before delivery.

Why transcoding cannot restore lost detail

Transcoding means decoding one format and encoding the result into another. When you convert MP3 to WAV, the decoder produces PCM samples from the information still present in the MP3. The WAV stores those decoded samples. It cannot ask the old encoder which information was discarded or recreate the exact original waveform.

MP3 to FLAC works the same way. The FLAC can preserve the decoded MP3 signal without another lossy generation, which is useful if your editor needs a lossless working file. It does not turn that signal back into the lossless source that existed before MP3 encoding. A larger file is not proof of added detail.

The audible result may even seem different after conversion because playback apps use different level settings, enhancement modes, or decoders. Compare both files in the same editor at matched loudness. If the converted file sounds louder, wider, or brighter, check the playback path before concluding that the conversion recovered anything.

Avoid repeated MP3 saves. Open the original once, do the work in a lossless project or working file, and create an MP3 only for a delivery that needs it. This prevents a new lossy encode after every edit. If you must receive an MP3 from someone else, ask whether it came directly from the generator or from another compressed copy.

You can inspect both files with the browser-only spectrogram generator. It can help you locate a bandwidth cutoff or repeated bright pattern, but the image cannot prove that one file is an original lossless export. No cleanup system can promise exact recovery of discarded source information. Processing can soften an abrasive edge, reduce a repeatable artifact, or rebalance the remaining sound. It cannot recreate the original instruments, performance detail, or master file from data that is no longer present.

Choosing a cleanup input

Use the source with the shortest trustworthy path from the generator. The priority is simple:

Before processing, duplicate the chosen source and lock the archive copy. In the working copy, name one audible target: a metallic layer on the vocal, splashy cymbals, steady hiss, or a reverb tail that masks the next phrase. The manual path starts with the smallest reversible move. Try a narrow or dynamic correction only when the problem stays in a consistent band. Stop when the named artifact is less distracting and the song still carries the same diction, transient shape, width, depth, and emotional movement. Back off when another pass mainly makes the file darker, flatter, narrower, quieter, or more phasey. Lossy damage can tempt you to keep processing because some roughness remains. Keep the original filename in your notes even if you rename the archive copy. FLAC is a practical archive format for genuine PCM sources because it reduces storage size without generation loss and includes integrity checks. WAV remains convenient for production tools and handoffs. You do not need to convert every WAV archive to FLAC. The important part is preserving the untouched source, verifying copies, and avoiding lossy-to-lossless labels that imply quality you never had.

Store at least one backup away from the working computer. A second folder on the same drive protects against accidental edits, not drive failure. Keep project files and plugin settings when they are necessary to reproduce the cleanup, but also render a lossless audio version that does not depend on the session opening years later.

Version only meaningful decisions. Create cleanup-v02 when you changed the treatment or backed it off after a comparison, not every time you pressed save. Add a short note: target symptom, test passage, change, audible benefit, audible cost, and chosen version. That note is more useful than a long chain of unexplained files.

Mixing and mastering handoff

Send the cleanest genuine source that fits the next person’s job. A mixing engineer working from stems needs the original aligned lossless stems, not MP3 previews converted to WAV. A mastering engineer usually needs the approved lossless mix, not every experiment. Ask for the required format, sample rate, bit depth, headroom, naming, and delivery method instead of guessing.

Do not upsample or increase bit depth merely to make the file look more professional. A new setting can be useful for a working session or required delivery container, but it does not add source resolution. Tell the recipient what the original was and what you changed. If the only source was MP3, say so. Honest provenance helps the next engineer avoid chasing artifacts that cannot be separated from the source.
