That order protects the part you already like: the melody, lyrics, arrangement, performance, and emotional shape. It also gives you a way back when a cleanup pass removes too much. You do not need to fix every unusual texture. You need a repeatable workflow that separates a distracting artifact from a creative choice and tells you when to stop.

Export and rights preflight

Before listening for artifacts, confirm that you can use and process the song. Keep a note of the account, plan, creation date, download date, collaborators, lyric source, samples, and any uploaded material. This is production housekeeping, not legal advice. If any part came from another person or catalogue, verify permission instead of assuming that an export button settles the question.

Export the least compromised version available. Suno’s Studio 2.0 documentation currently lists full-song, selected-range, and multitrack exports in 32-bit WAV or MP3, plus WAV downloads for individual stems. Use the options visible in your account today as the source of truth. For a cleanup master, choose WAV when it is available. MP3 is useful for sharing, but repeated lossy encoding can add its own swishy high-frequency texture and make diagnosis less certain.

Check the exported file before you open a processor:

  • Play the beginning and end to catch a clipped first transient or cut-off reverb tail.
  • Confirm that the file is the intended song version, not an earlier generation with a similar name.
  • Listen for clicks, silence, sudden level changes, or obvious clipping.
  • Keep the original sample rate and bit depth through cleanup unless the next stage requests something else.
  • Do not normalize merely to make the export look full on a waveform.

Ableton’s export documentation explains that normalization raises a render until its highest peak reaches the available headroom. That changes level, not artifact quality. Leave loudness decisions for a controlled comparison and the mastering stage.

Backup and versioning

Make the workflow reversible before making it clever. Put the untouched export in a read-only source folder and duplicate it into a working folder. Never save a cleanup render over the original. Manual and Sunofix cleanup paths

Start manually when the problem is narrow, repeatable, and easy to audition. For steady hiss, learn a noise profile from a section that contains noise without wanted music, then use the lowest reduction that makes the bed less distracting. For one harsh resonance, try a small bell cut. For sibilance on consonants, test a restrained de-esser. For a local click or tail, edit only that moment if your tool allows it.

Bypass the processor after every meaningful change. If you add a second tool, compare again before adding a third. Broad EQ can hide shimmer by darkening vocals and cymbals. Strong denoise can replace hiss with watery movement. Heavy de-essing can turn clear consonants into a lisp. A cleanup chain is not better because it contains more steps.

Use automation or a local edit when the defect appears in one section. A whole-song pass makes sense only when the same problem recurs across the track. Stem decision

Choose stems because they isolate a real decision, not because more files look more professional. If a brittle vocal is the only problem and a clean vocal stem exists, treating that stem may protect the cymbals and synths from unnecessary processing. If the metallic layer moves through the entire stereo mix, splitting the song can introduce bleed, gaps, or phase changes without giving you a cleaner target.

Test the stem set before editing. Align every file at the same start point, disable automatic warping or normalization, and play the stems together without the original full mix. Adding the original on top usually duplicates material and changes the level. Compare the stem sum with the original at matched loudness, then listen in mono for hollowing or unstable low end.

Use a stem when all three statements are true:

  1. One part clearly owns the distracting artifact.
  2. The separated stem sounds usable in the complete song, even if it is imperfect in solo.
  3. The cleaned stem recombines without changing timing, phase, balance, or ambience in a harmful way.

Stay with the full mix when the artifact crosses several sources, the stems create worse damage, or you do not intend to remix. Return to generation or editing when a lyric, note, pronunciation, performance, or arrangement is wrong. Cleanup cannot make a creative replacement on your behalf.

Level-matched A/B and QC

Every candidate must earn its place at matched loudness. A slightly louder file can seem clearer and more detailed even when the artifact is unchanged. A useful cleanup may also become slightly quieter because bright, busy energy was reduced. Match perceived level before deciding which version wins.

Align the untouched export and cleanup candidate, choose the same ten-to-twenty-second passage, and lower the louder version with clip or output gain. Switch in short bursts to compare the target texture, then play the complete phrase and chorus for continuity. Do not add a limiter or normalization effect just to create the match.

Run the QC pass in this order:

  1. Follow only the named artifact.
  2. Check vocal diction, cymbal decay, drum attack, bass weight, stereo depth, and reverb tails.
  3. Listen quietly on your main headphones or speakers.
  4. Check one ordinary playback system such as a phone or small speaker.
  5. Listen once from start to finish without touching a control.
  6. Record the gain offset, chosen version, improvement, and cost.

Stop when the lightest pass makes the artifact less distracting while the musical tradeoff remains acceptable. Back off when the file loses air, punch, width, depth, or emotional movement. Keep some artifact if removing the last trace also removes the life around it. That is not failure; it is a controlled decision.

Mastering handoff

Mastering starts after the cleanup version survives QC. Keep mastering out of the cleanup approval test. Once you add final compression, limiting, saturation, or brightening, you have changed the comparison. Approve the premaster first, then evaluate the master against that file at a sensible matched level.
